National Agencies – Elder law issues:

Department of Health and Human Services, Administration on Aging:   The federal agency dedicated to policy development and planning, and the delivery of supportive home and community-based services to seniors and caregivers.

Alzheimer’s Association  Non-profit organization, information and support services to patients and families.  Also funds research efforts to find a cure for Alzheimer’s, and provides information on caregiving.  Hotline: (800) 272-3900

Children of Aging Parents  Another non-profit organization dedicated to the provision of services to families and caregivers of seniors.  Phone:  (800) 227-7294

Medicare and Medicaid Services  – the federal agency which administers health insurance through Medicare and Medicaid.  The regulatory body for hospitals, nursing homes and home halth care agencies.  Medicare hotline:  (800) 633-4227

Center for Medicare Advocacy   A national non-profit organization dedicated to the provision of education, training, advocacy and legal assistance to Medicare beneficiaries, patients with chronic conditions, and long-term care recipients.  Phone:  (860) 456-7790

Medicare Rights Center  National non-profit organization offering assistance to seniors and people with disabilities.   Offers free educational materials on Medicare and Medicaid programs and services.  Hotline:  (800) 333-4114

Eldercare Locator  A nationwide directory assistance service, dedicated to assisting seniors and caregivers locate appropriate local support and services.  Funded by the Administration on Aging.  Toll free phone:  (800) 677-1116

National Senior Citizens Law Center   Offers assistance to legal aid offices and private lawyers working on behalf of lower-income seniors and disabled perople.  Acts as a clearinghouse for information on issues such as age discrimination, social security issues, pension plans, Medicaid, Medicare, nursing homes and protective services.

The National Consumer Voice for Quality Long-Term Care  Non-profit organization which provides information on nursing home reform.    Dedicated to improving quality standards and empowering residents.  Provides information on community-based, consumer/citizen action and long-term care ombudsmen groups.  Published information on nursing homes and long-term care provided upon request.
